On Friday, March 17th, I spoke at a ribbon cutting for the “groundbreaking interactive traveling education museum exhibit that teaches about the Holocaust and focuses on identity, bridging, belonging, and building community.”

This exhibit is a collaboration among Common Circles, the White Plains School District and White Plains Democratic District Leader Ellen Berger.

The exhibit will be in three schools – White Plains High School, Highlands and Eastview. The opening exhibit and ribbon cutting was held at White Plains High School.

Two highlights of the exhibit include:

• Dimensions in Testimony for USC Shoah Foundation, where participants can ask questions that prompt real-time responses from pre-recorded video interviews with Holocaust survivors and other witnesses to genocide
• World-renowned artist, Bayete Ross Smith’s series entitled “Our Kind of People” took photos of individuals in the White Plains community

This is a must see exhibit with its pioneering interactive advanced filming techniques, specialized display technology and next generation natural language processing to create interactive biography.

WHITE PLAINS MAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN STATE PRISON FOR MURDER. 

 

WHITE PLAINS, NY – Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced that a White Plains man was sentenced on December 5, 2022, to 25 years to life in state prison for the 2020 murder of Deron Strange.  

 

After a five-week trial, a jury on October 14, 2022 found Brandon Williams, 28, guilty of Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, all felonies.  

 

On May 27, 2020, at approximately 11:52 p.m., the defendant shot the 35-year-old victim multiple times with a semi-automatic handgun as he chased the victim around the parking lot of the victim’s residence on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in White Plains. The defendant fired five shots, striking the victim once in the abdomen and once in the pelvis. 

 

The victim was transported to the White Plains Hospital, where he died.  

 

The White Plains Police Department arrested the defendant at a hotel in Harrison on May 29, 2020, following an investigation, with assistance from the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.  

 

The case was before Judge George Fufidio in Westchester County Court, and was prosecuted by Bureau Chief Laura Murphy and Assistant District Attorney Marissa Morra-Wynn, both of the Trials and Investigations Division.

(Ardsley, NY) –Westchester County Parks and Sharc Creative present the White Plains Hospital Screenings Under the Stars, which kicks off with the musical comedy, Sing 2 (2021-PG) on Friday, July 15, at Kensico Dam Plaza, Valhalla.

 

County Executive George Latimer said, “Outdoor movies bring back fond childhood memories. I hope Westchester County residents will start some treasured family traditions and take advantage of this wonderful program, which is possible thanks to our sponsors!

 

Parks Commissioner, Kathleen O’Connor said, “Summertime is synonymous with outdoor movies, and Kensico’s great lawn is the perfect spot to enjoy a free movie with family and friends on a warm summer night.”

WHITE PLAINS MAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN STATE PRISON FOR 2020 ROBBERY AND STABBING.

 

White Plains, NY – Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced the sentencing of a White Plains resident who stabbed a man in the chest during a robbery in 2020.

 

Prince Rogers, 51, was sentenced on April 22, 2022, to 12 years in state prison, with five years of post-release supervision. A jury convicted Rogers after trial of Robbery in the First Degree, two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, all felonies.

 

On Nov. 18, 2020, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Rogers and the victim were sitting in the victim’s parked car on Tarrytown Road in Greenburgh when the defendant stabbed the victim in the chest with a knife. The defendant forcibly stole the victim’s money, cell phone and car, and fled the scene. The victim was then transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was treated for his injuries.

 

Greenburgh Police arrested Rogers at his residence following an investigation, with assistance from the White Plains Police Department and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.

 

The case was before Judge Robert Neary in Westchester County Court, and was prosecuted by the Trials and Investigations Division.

White Plains Insider: Westchester County Legislator Ben Boykin 5th District: April 1 - June 30: Harriet Tubman Journey to Freedom.

 

The City of White Plains and the White Plains Business Improvement District (WP BID) have secured “Harriet Tubman – The Journey to Freedom” sculpture for display in White Plains. The sculpture will be placed in Renaissance Plaza (aka Fountain Park) for public viewing from April 1 through June 30. This location in the heart of downtown White Plains ensures the sculpture will have high visibility and will be easily accessible to the public.

The City and the WP BID will create and promote a calendar of programs and events to highlight the sculpture’s presence. This calendar will include City and BID-sponsored events, as well as a number of programs and events sponsored by community organizations, such as:

• An outdoor showing of the Movie, Harriet, on Court Street on Saturday, May 21
• A tribute concert to Harriet Tubman in Renaissance Plaza on Wednesday, June 22 featuring the Sounds of A&R aka SOAR, an evening of Soul, R& B, Gospel and Jazz
• The annual Juneteenth Parade and Festival sponsored by the White Plains Juneteenth Heritage Committee on Saturday, June 11

About the sculpture

The 9 foot high, 2,400 lb. bronze sculpture was created by artist Wesley Wofford of North Carolina. Originally commissioned for a private client, the sculpture has more recently been made available to the public and has traveled to a number of locations around the United States.
